Crimson Vow Spoilers Day 6

It’s time for day six of the Magic the Gathering: Crimson Vow spoiler season, and today we have some great maps. Whether you want powerful graveyard tools, an easy combo piece from a creature, or just some great revelations about Innistrad’s history, it’s all here.

It was also a big day for the Pauper format and the Commander budget. There is a lot of really good cards of common rarity offered.

As with other days, due to time zones, there may be cards revealed on the sixth day that are not part of this roundup. They won’t be missed, however, and will be picked up for tomorrow’s update.

Distracting Geist // Intelligent Distraction

Tapping creatures an opponent controls each time you attack is helpful, especially when it bothers an enchantment that does the same. Not untapping on the next turn would have improved it, but it will still be useful in any aggro decks that use white.

This is sorcery-speed disenchantment, which is significantly less useful than true disenchantment. Gaining three life points might not be enough to justify the gear change.

For once, not paying the cost of Cleave can be very helpful. In any graveyard or deck that loves discarding, reducing your hand size to force discard at the end of the turn will be incredibly useful, perhaps more than just paying five mana to draw three cards.

Ouch, that’s a scary card. Exile creatures from your graveyard to inherit all of their activated abilities and putting a + 1 / + 1 marker on it could be fully opened with very little effort.

For a common, it’s pretty good! Putting two cards in your hand and two in your graveyard is a win-win in many different decks.

We had a thirst for knowledge and a thirst for meaning, and now is the hour of the thirst for discovery. Drawing three cards and then discarding two unless you discard a land might be useful, especially with Slogurk the Overslime from Midnight Hunt.

The Awakening of Edgar (name translated to be confirmed)

It’s actually a revive spell with Madness. Either play it for five mana and return a creature to the battlefield, or discard it and pay only one to return it to your hand. There are enough ways in Crimson Vow of throwing cards that could make this a pretty decent card.

Objectively better murder returns to Standard, having last seen in the original Theros. Being able to destroy a creature or a Planeswalker’s fur with only three mana is impressive, but what is more interesting is this text of art and flavor: have we just learned who will be the new vampire Innistrad?

Another card focused on the discard pile, this one makes a tapped 2/2 black zombie (without decay) if you discard a card. He does, however, have this annoying “once-per-turn” limitation, which keeps him from being too dumb.

Blood Vial Provider

One of the most exciting maps that have been announced for Crimson Vow so far is Bloodvial Purveyor. There is a really interesting trade-off between giving your opponents a deck of cards and allowing you to deal more damage to them, and in Commander, he could easily pilot whole new Rakdos decks that overload Hellkite Tyrant.

Another thing to note with this is that the effect is not an effect does not say it lasts until the end of the turn like effects like this usually do. This could cause Bloodvial Purveyor to go massive in just a few turns.

Henrika

A new Mono-Black Vampire Commander who can force sacrifices and draw cards at you before transforming into a Deathtouch Flying Lifelink comes in handy. The other side looks less good, however, as paying three mana (two of which is black) to give a limited selection of + 1 / + 0 creatures is a lot to ask for.

Innistrad likes the number thirteen, but that’s not the best way to use it. Pay four mana and have exactly thirteen permanents for a single explosion of seven damage is disappointing. It might work with instant speed sacrifice output to hit that amount, but other than that it’s too situational to be of much use.

A three-mana 3/2 Stomp is pretty good, especially when he makes a Blood token whenever he deals combat damage.

In the night

In the night

There haven’t been a lot of cards in Crimson Vow or Midnight Hunt that give back the night, and being able to refresh your hand at the same time is a fantastic bonus.

Runic wolf

Runic wolf

Rewarding yourself for expanding your already aggressive creature type with more direct damage is a great addition for tribal wolf decks. After the last few days of having disappointing wolves and werewolves, it’s nice to finally see one that has some potential.

Not much is happening with this one, it’s a temporary card perk that’s standard for red at this point. For two mana in common, it will be useful, but it’s not that exciting.

Seductive Pretender // Deadly Dancer

Another big flavor victory for Crimson Vow, transforming him to give him and another creature + 1 / + 0 until end of turn fits the theme perfectly. Not losing mana between phases is also very appreciated.

This is possibly the most suggestive Magic card ever printed. Kicking two creatures to turn Honeymoon Hearse into a creature is definitely symbolic of other the things that happen during honeymoons, and forgoing the usual crew keyword for ability certainly shows that they’re doing more than just driving the car…

It’s surprising that this isn’t a Story Spotlight card, which apparently shows the climactic battle between vampires and werewolves and all. It lets you choose one or both of giving creatures you control + 1 / + 0 until end of turn and / or a vampire deals damage equal to its power to another target creature. It probably didn’t have to be witchcraft, however.

Vanguard of the hamlet

Hamlet Vanguard is going to be a big, beefy boy in green / white human decks, as he gets double the number of + 1 / + 1 counters as non-token humans you control. While he doesn’t have any escapes, having Ward on him makes him a bit more of a threat.

Ascendant Pack Leader

A really useful one-drop wolf that grows bigger as you play big spells, it might take a while to start early in the game, but later on it could be a big issue.

Searching for the top four cards of your library and putting all lands into your hand is helpful, but putting all non-lands into your graveyard can be even better. Whether you need it as a ramp or as graveyard fuel, for two mana in common, it’s not bad at all.

A three-mana mana dork is a bit expensive, but its transformed side that can tap two mana makes up for it.

Legacy honored

It’s a basic three-mana boulder with a bit of graveyard hate that will likely be played mostly in low-powered, low-budget Commander decks. It’s always nice to have one, but don’t expect it to be the next Arcane Seal.

On-board windows (name translated to be confirmed)

On-board windows

Onboard windows deter opponents from attacking you by giving their creatures a -1 / -0 nerf. If they manage to deal four or more damage in a turn, however, Boarded Windows is exiled. It might be too big of a drawback to be usable, but the flavor is impeccable.

Ancient Lumberknot (name translated to be confirmed)

Antique wood knot

Making combat damage based on a creature’s toughness isn’t a new mechanic, but Ancient Lumberknot only allows this to happen if toughness is greater than strength. An effect like this without any drawbacks is extremely useful and could push Golgari into new and interesting design spaces.
